Business owners in Hereford are solely responsible for maintaining a safe working environment. This includes the electrical system.
To meet this requirement safely, you’ll need a competent electrician to carry out an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) within your commercial property.
What is an EICR?
An EICR is a formal document produced by a fully qualified electrician following an in-depth assessment of the electrical system. Its purpose is to outline electrical faults, damages and deterioration which requires attention. The report will also highlight areas which need improvement.
The purpose of an EICR
An EICR has five main purposes:
- Ensure the electrical installations are safe.
- Identify any wear & tear which needs attention.
- Highlight any parts which are no longer complaint.
- Prioritise faults in terms of urgency.
- To provide formal documentation.
EICR codes
An EICR is graded using codes - Code 1 being the most urgent. Let’s look at each code in more detail:
- Code 1 (C1): Danger present. A fault graded C1 requires urgent remedial work.
- Code 2 (C2): Potentially dangerous. A fault graded C2 requires remedial work as soon as possible.
- Code 3 (C3): Improvement recommended. To meet industry standards improvements should be made.
- Further Investigation (FI).
After the assessment has been completed our electricians will run through the report with you. We will explain each fault, the urgency and best solution. We will then be happy to arrange remedial works with you as soon as we can.
Why does my business need an EICR?
An EICR will fulfil the duty of care you have as a business owner. By law, employers are required to provide employees with a safe working environment. Electrics can be very dangerous if poorly maintained so this regulation protects both yourself and your employees.
How often do I need an EICR?
An EICR is required every five years. This applies for both Landlords and commercial property owners.
